Exploring

She let out a heaving breath that she didn’t know she had been holding in. She frowned as she strolled into a room and took in the paintings on the cream walls. Portraits of past family members. There were a lot of these around the house, most of them on wall next to the very large staircase that led to the rooms upstairs. Needless to say, she stuck out like a sore thumb here in the Whitewater household. They all had the same beautiful shades of silky white hair that her family members also had; the colour she had longed for as a child, just so she wasn’t the oddball. She had felt rather insecure about this at first, but the other Whitewaters seemed accepting enough, and when so many of them had that pale hair colouration, a few of them welcomed a bit of difference amongst them.

She was still having a slightly hard time adjusting to her new role as head of the household alongside Donovan. She wasn’t aware of how the rest of them operated, and still didn’t know them all personally. That was one reason she was glad Donovan was watching over her so carefully, she didn’t want to get on the wrong side of any of the more temperamental family members. Perhaps with his guidance, she’d fit in fine.

Her thoughts drifted back to Donovan. He certainly wasn’t what she expected. She was prepared to give up when she arrived at her new home, as her family couldn’t have been rid of her sooner and ‘graciously’ sent her to him weeks before their wedding to allow them to ‘get to know each other prior to the celebration’. In a way, it was indeed a blessing. Donovan certainly could be cold and snappy at times, but he wasn’t cruel, and he had been nothing but courteous and friendly to her. She had been lucky to get to speak to him before the wedding. It gave her a slightly more positive outlook towards her fate. And in fact, in time, she knew she’d be able to like it here and settle into her role as his wife.

She could get used to this.
